How Can You Support Your Child At Home?

There are many ways you can incorporate Spanish and Montessori into your home life.

Prepare the Environment

Set your child up for success in their home environment. Offer a limited number of toys at a time presented in an accessible manner, such as on an open shelf. Make some areas of your home a "yes space" for your child where he or she can explore freely.

Foster Internal Motivation

Instead of saying "good job," try asking your child how he or she feels. Encourage by smiling, nodding, or "sportcasting" (describing what the child is doing), but try to avoid projecting your own judgements on your child. Instead, encourage your child to be proud of him or herself.

Make It Accessbile

When possible, make your home accessible to your child. Use a stool or learning tower to allow your child to take care of themselves (such as washing their hands) or to help in the kitchen. Have some clothes, snacks, and other items where your child can access them independently.

Incorporate Spanish Media

Even if you don't speak Spanish, you can incorporate the language at home. Check out some library books in Spanish, find a TV show in Spanish for your child to watch, or play Spanish language children's music. Additional exposure to the target language will help your child build fluency.

Observe

Observe your child in action. Notice what types of materials he or she enjoys playing with and what developmental skills he or she is working on. Do your best to encourage these interests and skills through the materials you have available and the activities you encourage.

Take a Field Trip

Visit a place where your child will have the opportunity to hear Spanish spoken in public, or connect with a friend or family member who speaks Spanish. Your child will enjoy getting to utilize his or her budding language skills. You could even learn a few words or phrases to use with your child!
