CURRICULUM

Learn More About the Montessori Curriculum

At Mi Mundito Montessori, we follow a Montessori approach presented in the Spanish language. Children are immersed in the five areas of the Montessori curriculum: language (literacy), mathematics, sensorial, culture (including art and music), and practical life.

Language & Literacy

The Montessori language curriculum teaches children how to read and write in a developmental progression that utilizes a variety of hands-on materials. Teaching reading and writing begins with spoken language then progresses to phonemic awareness, creating words, and decoding. Montessori emphasizes rich language experiences using materials the child can see and feel. Despite the fact that Montessori was developed 100 years ago, the curriculum has proven to be aligned with what modern brain science has shown about how children should learn to read.

Mathematics

The Montessori math curriculum is a tactile experience where children learn about quantity and equations through hands-on experiences with the mathematics materials. Before memorizing the number symbols, children learn about 1:1 correspondence with real objects so they can visualize what the number symbols mean. This type of experience continues as they get older and begin doing mathematical operations using counting beads. Each material and activity is intentionally designed to build upon the previous activity in order to develop the child's mathematical sense and ability.

Sensorial

The sensorial aspect of the curriculum is designed to train and refine a child's five senses. At Mi Mundito Montessori, a combination of traditional Montessori sensorial materials and fun, modern materials such as sensory bins will be used. The greatest sensory experiences, however, can be found outside! Children will spend a significant portion of each day outside in the large yard and/or screened-in outdoor play area (weather permitting).

Culture

Culture is an important aspect of the curriculum where children learn about the world and historical themes. Children build an appreciation of their own culture as well as the cultures of others. This also includes art and music, topics that are both essential in the Montessori classroom. Children will participate in art or music activities daily at Mi Mundito Montessori.

Practical Life

The Montessori area of "practical life" teaches children skills such as cooking and food preparation, gardening and care of plants, taking care of themselves (dressing, washing, toileting), cleaning, and more. Practical life also develops fine and gross motor skills while building a child's confidence and ability to contribute to the home and community.
